Elliptical Bladed Savonius Rotor for Wind Energy: Efficacy of RANS Modeling for Flow Characteristics

Abstract: Wind energy is a key contributor to renewable energy production. Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) of Savonius type is advantageous in places of small-scale power production and low wind speed regions. It is a VAWT of the drag-based type. The disadvantage of a Savonius rotor is its low efficiency due to the generation of negative torque on the returning blade. To reduce the negative torque, the performance parameters of a Savonius rotor need to be optimized. The SST variant of k-w turbulence model is used in t… Show more

“…The quest to improve the performance of the rotor is still underway as the conversion rate of this turbine is still considered unsatisfactory [24,25]. Tian et al, [26] performed an extensive study on the performance of the Savonius rotor and proposed four methods that can be used to improve the performance of the said turbine which are optimization of the basic parameters of the rotor, enhancing the wind blades in the aspect of geometric characteristics, adding support to the blades and Improving the flow field around the blade.…”

“…In order to maximize the Savonius rotor's efficiency experts have suggested numerous modifications and refinements to the design. They had examined the effects of diverse design characteristics, such as modification of blade shape [3], [4], [5], [6], variation of overlap ratio [7], [8], [9], endplates [10], [11], aspect ratio [12], number of stage rotors [12], and number of blades [9]. The primary focus of these studies revolves around the examination of the impact of various parameters on its performance.…”
