Ellipsometric and Kerr-effect studies ofPt3X(X=Mn

Abstract: The conductivity tensor of polycrystalline Pt 3 X (XϭMn, Co) was determined between 1.6 and 5.2 eV. Samples were arc melted, mechanically polished, and annealed at 500°C for 1 h in Ar. The complex dielectric function was measured from 1.3 to 5.2 eV at room temperature with a rotating analyzer ellipsometer. The magneto-optic Kerr effect was studied between 10 and 293 K in magnetic fields up to 3 T. We used the tight-binding linear-muffin-tin-orbital method in the local spin-density approximation to determine th… Show more

“…We used this technique for studying the spectral and temporal dependence of the MO contrast in a CoPt 3 sample. The results show that a slight spectral dependence is present in the static MO response as already demonstrated in previous studies [26,27]. On the contrary, the dynamical behavior of the relative variations of rotation and ellipticity are identical and do not show any spectral dependency.…”

“…With the photon energy increasing, the value of Kerr rotation angle first increases 2 − 3 times and then decreases which means (CoPt 3 ) 1−x Ni x alloy films are more suitable for the shortwave range from 3.5 eV to 5 eV than other wave ranges recording. The peak at 4.1 eV was also found in Lange's experiment [12] and the peak position was in good agreement with his TB-LMTO calculation although the Kerr rotation angle value in Fig. 4 is slightly lower than his corresponding result [12].…”

Concerning the 4.1 eV peak, except for the contribution of Co atoms, it may be correlated with Pt 5d band because a peak has been found at about 4.1 eV in the Pt 5d photon energy spectra [13].…”

“…Kerr-magneto-optic spectra were measured on a spectrometer described elsewhere [23,24]. MnBi saturates magnetically in the 0001 direction at around 0.3 T at 300 K [25], where the measurements were taken.…”
