in ihrer studie über die materielle Kultur des christentums vertritt colleen McDannell die these, dass unsere glaubensvorstellungen durch die Dichotomien von Heiligem und profanem, geist und Materie, Frömmigkeit und Kommerz geprägt sind. Zugleich allerdings hemme ein solch dualistisches Denken unsere Fähigkeit, das Funktionieren von religion und glaube in der realen Welt tatsächlich zu begreifen. religiöse praktiken, rituale und glaubensvorstellungen können nicht verstanden werden, so McDannell, ohne dass sowohl materielle wie spirituelle elemente einbezogen werden. 2 Der vorliegende Aufsatz beschäftigt sich mit zwei Welten, die nur scheinbar im Widerspruch zueinander stehen: der Welt der religion und der Welt der unterhaltung. er basiert auf der these, dass die Zunahme von geisterglauben und die entstehung der spiritistischen Bewegung im 19. Jahrhundert eng mit der entwicklung des modernen showbusiness verbunden waren. Wesentliche Aspekte des anglo-amerikanischen spiritismus hatten sowohl mit religiösem glauben als auch mit spektakel und unterhaltung zu tun. Ziel des Aufsatzes ist es, sich der Kulturgeschichte des geisterglaubens unter einem Blickwinkel zu nähern, der eine dichotome Betrachtungsweise und die damit verbundene starre unterteilung in geistige und sogenannte "weltliche" Felder vermeidet. Bislang beeinflusste die von McDannell und anderen kritisierte dualistische Aufteilung auch die kulturhistorischen Arbeiten zum geisterglauben. spiritistische phänomene wurden so als unabhängig von und im Kontrast zu unterhaltung, Fiktion und spektakel betrachtet. ich möchte diese sichtweise in Frage stellen und aufzeigen, wie wichtig es ist, in die Diskussion um spiritismus und religion Aspekte der unterhaltung mit einzubeziehen sowie umgekehrt den mitunter religiösen charakter von unterhaltung und spektakel herauszuarbeiten.lange wurde verkannt, welch tiefe spuren das 19. Jahrhundert in showgeschäft, Werbung und Konsumdenken der westlichen gesellschaften des 20.
