Elimination and detoxification of triclosan by manganese peroxidase from white rot fungus

Abstract: The antimicrobial and preservative agent triclosan (TCS) is an emerging and persistent pollutant with a ubiquitous presence in the aquatic environment. Thus, TCS was treated with manganese peroxidase (MnP), laccase and the laccase-mediator system with 1-hydroxybenzotriazole. MnP was most effective in eliminating TCS among the three enzymatic treatments, with TCS concentration being reduced by about 94% after 30 min following treatment with 0.5 nkat mL(-1) MnP and being almost completely eliminated after 60 min… Show more

“…However, no significant elimination of CBZP by ligninolytic enzymes, laccase, manganese peroxidase (MnP) and lignin peroxidase (LiP) from white rot fungi has been observed [2,6]. On the other hand, we recently demonstrated that ligninolytic enzymes such as laccase and MnP are effective in degrading endocrine disruptors [7][8][9][10][11] and personal care products [12]. In this study, we report that repeated treatment with laccase and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) is effective in eliminating CBZP.…”

“…MnP is another ligninolytic enzyme that has shown effectiveness for elimination of EDC (Inoue, Hata, Kawai, Okamura, & Nishida, ; Tamagawa, Yamaki, Hirai, Kawai, & Nishida, ; Tsutsumi, Haneda, & Nishida, ). In a study by Tsutsumi et al.…”

“…Manganese peroxidase from P. chrysosporium was able to totally degrade triclosan 11 (TCS), while the best performance of laccases from T. versicolor (33.9% residual TCS) was obtained only in presence of hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) as mediator and double enzymatic concentration (Inoue et al 2010). Similarly, carbamazepine depletion was closed to 14% with manganese peroxidase and almost null with laccases alone.…”
