Abstract:Elias or the struggle with democracyLode Wils confronts the recently published biography by Pieter Jan Verstraete of Hendrik Elias (1902-1973), one of the foremost protagonists of Flemish-nationalism during the interwar years and WWII, with his own view and that of other scholars. The title, derived from a well-known Flemish novel, refers to the gradual sliding away of the academic Elias from democratic principles to New Order, fascist and national-socialist thinking and practices.
