“…In a randomized study on former asbestos workers, patients given oral retinol (25,000 IU) have shown a consistent increase of triglyceride levels; from an average of 169 mg/dl at baseline to 212 mg/dl at 2 years [34]. Our results confirm that high-dose vitamin A causes significant increases in serum triglycerides although not of the alarming magnitude observed in patients with preexisting risk factors or hypertrigly ceridemia [32]. The mechanism that leads to the eleva tion of serum lipids is unknown, but it is likely that the genesis of this abnormality is multifactorial, depend ing for its frequency and entity on the kind of drug and the presence of predisposing factors [33].…”

“…The correlation between retinoid supplementation or therapy and elevated triglyceride levels has been documented by a number of authors both for natural vitamin A [29,31] and for the synthetic compounds used in dermatology [13,32]. The observed incidence of this side effect varies from 20% with etretinate to 100% in 10 patients receiving 500.000 IU of retinol a day [29.…”

“…No long term relationship with cirrhosis or inflammatory bowel disease has been found (35). Hyper‐lipidaemia usually occurs as increased serum triglycerides in 19% and cholesterol in 12%, is proportional to the dosage, and is reversible (16, 39). The greatest increase is seen in the very‐low‐density‐lipoprotein (VLDL) and low‐density‐lipoprotein (LDL) fractions (35, 39).…”

The greatest increase is seen in the very‐low‐density‐lipoprotein (VLDL) and low‐density‐lipoprotein (LDL) fractions (35, 39). There is a decrease in the levels of high‐density‐lipoproteins (HDL) in 20 to 25% of patients (16).…”
