Elevation of Serum Albumin Levels in Nagase Analbuminemic Rats by Allogeneic Bone Marrow Cell Transplantation

Abstract: We investigated the feasibility of correcting the congenital absence of albumin in Nagase analbuminemic rats (NARs) by allogeneic bone marrow cell transplantation (BMT). Seven-week-old male NARs were used as recipients, and 6- to 8-week-old male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used as allograft donors. NARs were divided into three groups: a BMT group (n = 10) in which bone marrow cells were infused into the liver; a hepatocyte transplantation (HCT) group (n = 8) in which hepatocytes were transplanted into the li… Show more

“…Similar findings were obtained in a noninjury model using analbuminemic rats. An infusion of bone marrow cells resulted in the appearance of bone marrow‐derived, albumin‐expressing cells 33. Bone marrow cell infusion resulted in a steady increase in serum albumin that was maintained over 8 weeks; this was unlike the greater but temporary increase seen in the same model with hepatocyte infusion.…”

“…The studies that have shown the best functional improvement are those in which bone marrow has been infused into an unirradiated recipient in the context of ongoing liver injury 32, 33, 35. This description might also apply to a large proportion of the patients involved in clinical trials of stem cell therapy.…”

“…In the congenital absence of albumin in Nagase analbuminemic rats (NARs), liver infusion of allogeneic BMSCs, eight weeks later, the serum albumin levels of the BMSCs transplantation group were significantly higher than in the control group, also the hepatocyte-like cells derived from BMSCs expressed albumin in the liver of NARs, this indicates the BMSCs can differentiate into hepatocyte-like cells when intrahepatically infused into allogeneic NARs rats [70].…”
