Elevation of CA 125 in patients with benign and malignant ascites

Abstract: The presence of CA 125, an ovarian cancer-associated antigen, was assessed in serum and ascites from patients with ovarian cancer (n = 47), hepatocellular carcinoma (n = 21), and liver cirrhosis (n = 40). Abnormal levels of serum CA 125 were observed in 49% of ovarian cancer patients, and in 89% of these same patients with ascites. In all cases of cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma with ascites, CA 125 levels were above 35 U/ml. The specificity and sensitivity of CA 125 measurement for detecting ascites in … Show more

“…This finding may also support the notion that CA-125 is of mesothelial rather than tumoral origin. This is consistent with the findings in previous studies (Bergmann et al 1987;Zeimet et al 1996;Epiney et al 2000;Sjoval et al 2002;Miralles et al 2003;Uenishi et al 2003).…”

“…High level of ADA (cut off value 24 U/L) gave the test sensitivity of 93% and specificity 96%. [2][3][4] The CA-125 is a tumor marker associated with ovarian carcinoma. The CA-125 is also significantly higher in tuberculous peritonitis.…”

“…According to our results, there was a significant correlation between CA 125 serum levels and HF, including the correlation between this tumoral marker and BNP values. Many reports 12,14,19,36,37 have suggested that serosal fluids occurring in patients with HF are directly responsible for elevated serum CA 125 levels and that the presence of serosal fluid may stimulate the release of CA 125 rather than its cytopathological content. Recent studies have suggested that CHF may, in part, be an inflammatory disease.…”
