Elevated Tear Interleukin-6 and Interleukin-8 Levels in Patients With Conjunctivochalasis

Abstract: Inflammation may have a role in the pathogenesis of CCh. The clinical severity of CCh parallels the increased tear IL levels. Markers for inflammation are more pronounced in the advanced stages of this disease.

“…Furthermore, given an association between Cch and inflammation, anti-inflammatory medications are also recommended and similarly have been shown to improve dry eye signs and symptoms in patients who suffer from dry eye syndrome. 5,[20][21][22] Finally, removal of redundant conjunctival folds, either with surgical or nonsurgical techniques (such as thermal cauterization or electrocoagulation) can improve symptoms and tear film stability. [23][24][25][26][27] As with all studies, our findings must be considered along with the limitations of this study.…”

“…They found that some apopitosis regulation proteins, apopitosis related proteins, and inflammatory proteins are in the CCh but not in normal controls. Erdogan-Poyraz et al17 reported that inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-8 levels were correlated with the severity of CCh. Guo et al18 found that pentraxin 3 immunostaining was strongly positive in the subconjunctival stroma of CCh specimens.…”

“…[1][2][3] Although initially asymptomatic, CCh eventually leads to dryness, tearing, subconjunctival hemorrhage, and exposure [2][3][4] Tear levels of proinflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-␣ (TNF-␣), interleukin 1-␤ (IL-1␤), IL-6, and IL-8 are elevated in CCh patients. [5][6][7] The coexisting ocular surface inflammation might further be aggravated by delayed tear clearance, which is also frequently associated with CCh. 8 -10 We have long speculated that excessive proteolytic degradation by matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) leads to CCh.…”
