Elevated Serum Neutrophil to Lymphocyte and Platelet to Lymphocyte Ratios Could be Useful in Lung Cancer Diagnosis

Abstract: Background: Lung cancer (LC) is still the primary cause of cancer deaths worldwide, and late diagnosis is a major obstacle to improving lung cancer outcomes. Recently, elevated preoperative or pretreatment neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet to lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and mean platelet volume (MPV) detected in peripheral blood were identified as independent prognostic factors associated with poor survival with various cancers, including colon cancer, esophageal cancer, gastric cancer and breast cance… Show more

“…In the literature, increased N/L ratio was significantly related with the lung cancer (Kemal et al, 2014), gastric cancer (Kim et al, 2015), colon cancer (Absenger et al, 2013) and papillary thyroid cancer DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.7314/APJCP.2016.17.4.2321 Inflammatory Hematological Parameters in Benign Nodular Goiter andPapillary Thyroid Cancer (Seretis et al, 2013).…”

“…The relative difference in the neutrophil and lymphocyte counts, the neutrophilto-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), has attracted the interest of investigators as an emerging systemic inflammatory marker. A high preoperative or pretreatment NLR was identified as an independent prognostic factor associated with poor survival in various cancers, including breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, and mesothelioma (He et al, 2014;Kemal et al, 2014). The pathogenesis and progression of the disease may be correlated to ovarian cancer; prognosis was found to be correlated with tumour volume in metastatic renal cell carcinoma, and there are reports that NLR may be a negative prognostic marker in thyroid carcinoma (Kim et al, 2013).…”

“…[4][5][6]8 El VPM, el INL y el ITL se miden como parte de los análisis de sangre de rutina en muchos laboratorios sin que esto implique costos adicionales. 4,9 El VPM se asocia con la activación y la función de los trombocitos en las afecciones inflamatorias. 6,9 Los trombocitos son componentes vitales de la hemostasia normal y liberan varias citocinas proinflamatorias.…”
