Elevated rates of severe neural tube defects in a high-prevalence area in Northern China

Abstract: In the northern provinces of China, the birth prevalence rate of neural tube defects (NTDs) is among the highest in the world-at about 6 per 1,000 births in rural areas. A unique population-based birth defects surveillance system in which photographs are taken of infants with selected external birth defects was implemented in two provinces in northern China and two provinces in southern China where NTD rates approximate those in the United States. In the period from March 1992 through December 1993, 660 infant… Show more

“…Neural tube defects (NTDs) are one of the most common human congenital malformations in newborn children, affecting annually approximately 1 in 1,000 newborns in Italy (Mastroiacovo and Bianchi 1991) and 200,000 newborns or more worldwide (Moore et al 1997). Myelomeningocele, commonly called Spina Bifida, is the most common form of NTD.…”

“…Previous studies identified that the prevalence of NTD in the northern areas of China is among the highest in the world (16,17) -about 6 per 1000 live births involved NTD in northern rural areas in 1997 (15) . Since 2008, although the prevalence of NTD had decreased because of some interventions, monitoring of national birth defects showed that the average prevalence of NTD in northern rural areas of China was about 3 per 1000 births.…”

“…For the joint genotype, the odds ratio was 3.69 (95% Spina bifida is a common and severe congenital anomaly that yearly affects approximately 1 in 1,000 newborns in Italy 1 and 200,000 newborns or more worldwide. 2,3 Clinical and epidemiologic evidence, such as the variability of occurrence rates by geography, time, socioeconomic status, and ethnicity, and the relatively low recurrence risk within families, suggests that the etiology of spina bifida involves interactions between multiple genetic and environmental factors. 4,5 However, defining these factors and interactions has proven difficult.…”
