“…The regenerative aspect is supported by studies examining the labeling of tubule cells for DNA synthesis as an index of cell proliferation. Using either tritiated thymidine (Sworn and Fox, 1974;Konishi and Ward, 1989), bromodeoxyuridine (Short et al, 1989) or proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) labeling (Hard, 1998), these special investigations demonstrate that CPN-affected basophilic tubules have a high rate of cell proliferative activity. Because of the substantial cell turnover that typifies CPN tubules (Figure 3), it is not surprising that an association with the occasional development of atypical tubule hyperplasia, a precursor of renal tubule tumor (Hard et al, 1995), has been recorded (Blatherwick and Medlar, 1937;Foley et al, 1964;Peter et al, 1986;Hard et al, 1995).…”

“…The modified α 2µ -globulin accumulates in the lysosomes, resulting in cell death (hyaline droplet nephropathy). This loss of tubule cells is followed by compensatory cell proliferation in the tubules (53) and eventual formation of renal tumors. In support of the role of this mechanism of tumor formation, NCI Black Reiter rats do not produce α 2µ -globulin (54).…”
