Elevated matrix metalloproteinase 7 expression promotes the proliferation, motility and metastasis of tongue squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: Background: Matrix metalloproteinase 7 (MMP7), as the smallest member of the matrix metalloproteinase family, has been verified to be implicated in cancer progression, especially metastasis. However, its expression pattern and function in tongue cancer is not clear. Methods: The expression of MMP7 in human tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) specimens compared with their respective paired nontumour tissues by real-time PCR and immunohistochemical staining. The effect of MMP7 on the proliferation, apoptosis, … Show more

“…MMP7 also cleaves TNF-α and other MMPs 21 . MMP7 promotes cell proliferation 22 but we observe no significant role of MMP7 in nasal cell proliferation. The absence of MMP7 protects mice from LPS-induced intestinal permeability and lethality, possibly due to MMP7 activation of β-defensins 23 .…”

“…Cell proliferation was measured by counting the cells in the logarithmic phase using Cell Counting Kit-8 (#CK04; Dojindo Kumamoto, Japan) as previously outlined 22 . The cells were first transfected with siRNA or plasmid and then were plated into a 96-well plate.…”

“…Elevated MMP-2 and MMP-7 activity has been linked to a poor prognosis in many cancers including CRC[ 27 , 28 , 38 - 47 ]. As mentioned, the impact of MICR for CRC on plasma levels of MMP-2 and MMP-7 is unknown.…”

“…MMP-2 knockdown was shown to suppress the proliferative capacity of hepatocellular carcinoma cells in vitro [ 26 ]. MMP-7 was shown to promote the proliferation of mouse-derived tongue squamous cell carcinoma [ 27 ]. MMP-7 was found to be directly involved in cell survival, proliferation, migration and invasion of the cervical cancer cells, and its expression was suggested as a novel prognostic biomarker [ 28 ].…”
