Elevated Level of miR‐551b‐5p is Associated With Inflammation and Disease Progression in Patients With Severe Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract: Circulating microRNAs have the potential to be noninvasive biomarkers for assessing disease progression. MicroRNA-551b-5p (miR-551b-5p) was previously reported to be differentially expressed in pancreatic patients. The serum miR-551b-5p level was measured in patients with mild acute pancreatitis (MAP), severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), and healthy controls using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis to evaluate its impact on inflammatory response. Acute Physiology and Chronic Health… Show more

“…These results encourage future studies on the potential role of MALAT1 in CCA. In addition, increased levels of miR-604 and miR-551B in serum EVs from patients with CCA also provided excellent diagnostic capacities (up to 0.944) for CCA and some studies already started to evaluate their involvement in carcinogenesis and as diagnostic biomarkers [87][88][89][90]. Considering the high resistance of small ncRNAs to RNase degradation, additional efforts should be employed in order to validate their diagnostic accuracy.…”

“…For example, cecum injury sometimes leads to serum amylase and lipase elevation but cannot bother the concentration of miR‐216a in circulation (Kong et al, ). More important, a quite number of research works suggest that there is a good correlation between serum miRNA and severity of AP (Blenkiron et al, ; M. Gao et al, ; Liu et al, ; P. Lu et al, ; Y. Zhang et al, ), and that some miRNAs can reflect the degree of injury to some extent (Calvano et al, ; Wang et al, ) and assist the diagnosis of AP‐associated ALI (X. G. Lu et al, ; N. Shi et al, ). Taken together, the superiority of miRNAs indicates that they have potential as a reference for predicting disease outcomes and guiding treatment.…”

“…Plasma-derived and serum-derived hsa-miR-193a-5p have been reported as promising indicators for diagnosing amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) ( 40 ), ovarian cancer ( 41 ), chronic myeloid leukemia ( 42 ), human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection ( 43 ), colorectal cancer metastasis ( 44 ), and aortic aneurysms ( 45 ). On the other hand, plasma-derived or serum-derived hsa-miR-551b-5p has been reported as a promising indicator of acute pancreatitis ( 46 , 47 ) and gastric cancer ( 48 ). As far as we are aware, there are no reports of using EV-derived miRNAs to diagnose MPM, and our report will be the first to do so.…”
