Elevated Inflammatory Markers in Response to Prolonged Sleep Restriction Are Associated With Increased Pain Experience in Healthy Volunteers

Abstract: Insufficient sleep quantity may facilitate and/or exacerbate pain through elevations of IL-6. In disorders where sleep disturbances are common, insufficient sleep quantity itself may establish and maintain its co-occurrence with pain and increased inflammation.

“…Associations between inflammation, sleep loss and psychological symptoms are well documented in a variety of conditions [14,27,28,31,38,46,70]. Although the interrelationships are not fully understood, abnormal hypothalamic-pituitary adrenal-axis (HPA-axis) function has emerged as a possible explanation [27].…”

“…One possible explanation is that pain at night is a characteristic of shoulder disorders, which could influence sleep habits. On the contrary, sleep disturbance provoked low-level systemic inflammation with more sensitive nociception, which could cause shoulder pain in survivors (Haack et al 2007;Mork et al 2014). These complex scenarios could cause both sleep disturbance and shoulder pain in the participants.…”

“…It is well established that pain hinders sleep and disturbed sleep lowers pain threshold. [17][18][19] Whether SLD precedes or follows pain onset is unclear, but reciprocal effects are likely. 17 Even after treatment with anti-inflammatory medications, patients with OA show significantly greater objective SLD, as compared with age-matched control subjects.…”
