Elements of histology

Abstract: Retzius, Bizzozero, and many others it is now known that in the embryo and adult, in plant and animal, vertebrates and invertebrates, all kinds of cells, before their protoplasm undergoes division, show complicated changes of their nucleus, leading to division. This manner of division is called the indirect division or karyokinesis. It has been observed by Mayzel, Schleicher, and Flemming, that the nuclear fibrils show movement, hence the name karyokinesis. This ELEMENTS OF HISTOLOGY.[chap. n. circulating blo… Show more

“…Normal B-cell growth and differentiation follow an established pathway, and malignancy may occur at any stage of differentiation and freeze the cell at that point, immortalizing it (21). The hairy cell is a well-differentiated preplasmatic B cell that expresses the CD25 (tac) antigen.…”

“…As in certain hematologic malignancies, solid tumors progress in stages, with increasing mutational changes, eventually leading to autonomous growth (15,16,21). Progression relies on a number of biological processes.…”

“…Compared to the parent tumour, a mutant line may show one or more of the following aberrations: a change in the proportion of successful takes on homoiotransplantation; an increased rate of growth of the established tumour; an increased tendency to metastasise; a loss of host specificity with the ability to grow in relatively alien strains (Strong, 1949); a tendency to regress after trauma and occasionally to induce absolute immunity to further implants of the same tumour; transformation from one morphologic type to another (see Dunham and Stewart's survey, 1953); acquisition of the facility to produce ascites (Klein and Klein, 1951;Klein, 1955); shift in the modal value of chromosome number to the tetraploid state (Hauschka and Levan, 1953); and, as we have shown, a marked change in radiosensitivity.…”
