Elements of Biophilic Design Increase Visual Attention in Preschoolers

Abstract: Biophilic design increases attention among adults, but little is known about the influence of biophilic design on attention in childhood. We assessed visual attention in 4–5-year-old children as a function of high and low degrees of biophilic design. In the high-biophilic-design condition, the children saw four plants, which were placed on their desks. In the low-biophilic-design condition, the children saw no plants on their desks. The children viewed a series of abstract images on a computer screen while the… Show more

“…Fadda et al's research specifically demonstrated the beneficial effects of biophilic design on preschoolers' visual attention in indoor environments. Notably, even a brief exposure to plants on a desk for 48 seconds increased the duration of children's initial visual fixation on art displays [34].…”

“…Publications containing research in the field of biophilic design in school and workplace interiors generally focus on the impact of the presence of greenery on users as one of the patterns of biophilic design. Authors agree that the impact is positive: it can increase productivity (Qin-ghua et al 2021), enhance visual attention among children (Fadda et al 2023), and reduce stress and fatigue (Sanchez et al 2018). One study examined the multisensory impact on the user, and the results highlighted the importance of the impact of greenery through all the senses (Aristi-zabal et al 2021).…”

“…Also, an eyetracker was used in several of the studies reviewed. In a study by Fadda et al (2023), a research group of preschool children was shown a sequence of photographs, one with the presence of plants near the screen and the other without the presence of plants. The study verified the attention paid to the presented images and showed that, in the presence of plants, the children were focused on the presented images for longer.…”
