Elemental selenium enables enhanced water oxidation electrocatalysis of NiFe layered double hydroxides

Abstract: Elemental Se with monoclinic phase tunes the electronic states of metallic sites for NiFe-layered double hydroxides and promotes the generation of γ-NiOOH, leading to enhanced catalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction.

“…Simultaneously, the presence of NiOOH is also proved by the HRTEM image of Ni2V-MOFs@NF (Figure S25). The lattice fringes with a fringe distance of 1.01 nm belong to the (200) planes of Ni2V-MOFs, while others with a fringe distance of 0.70 nm are assigned to (003) planes of the γ-NiOOH phase . However, during the long-time stability test, the MOF catalysts loaded on the surface of nickel form may fall off due to weak adhesion.…”

In addition, the catalysts firmly anchored on the surface of the substrate will be damaged when they afford the constant current impact and corrosion of the strong alkaline electrolyte.…”

“…XPS fitting of Fe 2p (Figure 5e) is to provide a qualitative illustration of iron on the near surface of LDHs. Two peaks with the binding energy of 713.60 eV and 727.00 eV could be recognized and well assigned to Fe 2p 3/2 and Fe 2p 1/2 , respectively [38,39]. The detailed Fe content is determined to be about 0.5 wt.…”

“…Owing to their intrinsic electroconductivities and the ability to modify the electronic structures of their active metal centers, metal chalcogenides have been the subject of extensive studies. [62,162] More specifically, the pairing of metal sulfides with other metal catalysts has been reported to improve both the catalyst efficiency and stability during the OER. For instance, Wang and co-workers fabricated (NiFe)S 2 pyrite mesocrystals in the form of nearly single crystalline porous cubes for the OER.…”
