In the ''Sea Diamond'' shipwreck, it is estimated that almost 1.7 tons of batteries/accumulators and approximately 150 cathode ray tube technology televisions have gone to the bottom of the sea. Under these circumstances, all the aforementioned materials will eventually undergo severe accelerated corrosion. Consequently, a variety of heavy metals will either be released in seawater or precipitate in the form of salts resulting in contamination of the sea sediments. According to the ship data, and the aforementioned quantities of batteries and televisions, it is estimated that approximately 75-80 g of mercury, 630-1,050 g of cadmium and 1.14-1.26 tons of lead exist in the wreck only due to the electrical and electronic equipment present in the ship, not to mention the significant amount of heavy metals such as copper, nickel, ferrous and chromium that exist in the hulk. Four series of seawater sampling (n = 85) were conducted in different stations surrounding the wreck area in order to assess the overall impact from the release of heavy metals in the surrounding aquatic environment. The analysis indicated that there were stations where lead, zinc and cadmium were present in concentrations higher than the permissible limits set by the Unites States Environmental Protection Agency for seawater. Furthermore, the analysis of three series of sediment sampling (n = 31) from the wreck area showed elevated but expected concentration values for ferrous and manganese, considering the geological background of the area and contamination with lead, copper and cadmium.

ABSTRACT. Despite the great commercial and economic importance of mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis (Bivalvia, Mollusca) in Greece, little information is available concerning their population genetic structure. We used RAPD markers to examine genetic differentiation and potential impact of aquaculture practices and other anthropogenic activities on the genetic structure of two cultivated and eight wild mussel populations collected from one Turkish and nine Greek coast sites. Five random decamer primers were chosen, among 34 tested, for the analysis of 433 individuals. Eighty-eight bands (genetic loci) were scored, all of which were polymorphic. No indication of reduced genetic variability was observed in the cultured populations. In contrast, a loss in genetic diversity was observed in populations from two localities (Canakkale and Kalochori) that are heavily polluted by chemical contaminants. analyses and exact tests revealed significant heterogeneity among M. galloprovincialis population samples, although their genetic divergence seemed to be independent of geographic distances. Anthropogenic activities, i.e., marine pollution and transplantation of mussels, appear to have played an important role in shaping patterns of genetic diversity and differentiation among Greek M. galloprovincialis populations.

In recent years, the process of urbanization has been growing in Iguatu, important city of the semi-arid region of Brazil. This process has influenced the quality of aquatic environments due to effluent discharge and the emission of pollutants. Iguatu has modern and efficient sewage treatment system, but only 15% of the population benefits. This paper aimed at the determination of 9 metals and 12 physical-chemical parameters to characterize of Bastiana Lake-CE and to evaluate the influence of effluent discharge. The results of the analysis of toxic metals showed presence of Zinc (Zn) and manganese (Mn) at levels above of maximum limits established by Brazilian legislation. Exposure to Mn can affect the IQ (Intellectual quotient). Water samples showed high concentration of organic matter (BOD), nitrogen, phosphorus, soluble substances hexane and presence of floating materials. The level of nutrients (N and P) classified the lake as eutrophic and hypereutrophic and may cause risk to human health. Results suggest that actions must be taken by government agencies to prevent the complete degradation of Lake Bastiana (Ceará, Brazil). Iguatu tem o sistema de tratamento de esgoto moderno e eficiente, mas apenas 15% da população se beneficia. Este trabalho teve como objetivo a determinação de 9 metais e 12 parâmetros físico-químicos para a caracterização da Lagoa da Bastaiana e avaliar a influência do descarte de efluentes. Os resultados da análise de traços de metais tóxicos mostrou presença de zinco (Zn) e manganês (Mn) em níveis acima dos limites máximos estabelecidos pela legislação brasileira. A exposição a Mn pode afetar o QI (quociente intelectual). As amostras de água apresentaram alta concentração de matéria orgânica (expressos em DBO), nitrogênio, fósforo, substâncias solúveis em hexano e presença de materiais flutuantes. O nível de nutrientes (N e P) classificou o lago como eutróficos e hipereutrófico e pode causar risco para a saúde humana. Os resultados sugerem que ações devem ser tomadas por agências governamentais para evitar a degradação completa do Lago Bastiana (Ceará, Brasil).
