Element-specific magnetometry of EuS nanocrystals

Abstract: A soft x-ray absorption and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism ͑XMCD͒ study of the ferromagnetism in solution-grown EuS nanocrystals ͑NCs͒ is reported. The absorption edges of Eu M 5 and M 4 , S K, O K, and P K were probed to determine elementally specific contributions to the magnetism of EuS NCs. Differential spin absorption was observed by XMCD at the Eu M 5,4 edges confirming the presence of a magnetic moment on the Eu 2+ 4f shell. No dichroic signal was observed for S, O, or P. Vibrating sample magnetometr… Show more

“…235 The thickness of the thin films was estimated to be 1.5¯m using a laser scanning microscope (Figure 32b). The electron diffraction patterns of EuS tiny nanoparticles determined using TEM measurements were also found to be in good agreement with those of the corresponding (111), (200), (220), and (311) planes of NaCl-type EuS, respectively (Figure 32a, inset). The EuS particle size from TEM measurements is found to be approximately 9 nm.…”

“…PXRD (Figure S2) gave peaks consistent with a rock-salt crystal structure and no other crystalline phase of rare earth compound, although from previous study we know there is likely an amorphous component 58. GdS and EuS share the same rock-salt structure and nearly the same lattice parameters (EuS is 6.7 % larger) 35,36.…”

“…The trends in magnetic behavior are qualitatively comparable to those observed for bulk Gd doped EuS samples. In order to fully understand the contributions from Gd and Eu to the observed magnetism, these Eu 1- x Gd x S NC samples will be further investigated using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques58 in the future.…”

“…Europium has the advantage for magnetic investigations as a Mossbauer active nuclei, but the disadvantage that neutron diffraction is quite difficult due to the high absorption rate of neutrons by Europium. Although not discussed here, X-ray magnetic circular dichroism is another excellent probe of magnetic europium materials [119]. The magnetic studies of europium sulfide suggest that the ferromagnetic coupling is weakened in small nanoparticles.…”
