“…Increased attention has been focussed even on the ultrastructure of the vitreous body. This is natural since the structural components of the latter are almost entirely submicroscopic.Earlier authors have demonstrated that the vitreous body is pervaded by submicroscopic filaments (Schuchardt et al, 1950; Schwarz, 1951 a, b;Matoltsy et al, 1951). Gross et al (1955) isolated, by centrifugation, such filaments from fragmented vitreous bodies, purified this material (which had been termed vitrosin by Matoltsy, 1952), and demonstrated that it now had the low and wide angle x-ray diffraction patterns typical of collagen.…”
