In der Offhighway-Antriebstechnik gibt es neben Fahrzeugtypen wie Land-, Baumaschinen, Flurförder-und Bahnfahrzeugen auch unterschiedlichste Einsatzmöglichkeiten für gleiche Arbeitsmaschinen. Als Beispiel sei hier der vielfältige Einsatz von Traktoren als Arbeitsmaschine in der Land-und Forstwirtschaft oder für Transportarbeiten genannt. Dies führt zwangsläufig zu einer großen Variation bei Antriebssträngen und Getriebebauformen. Um sowohl den gesetzlichen Anforderungen hinsichtlich Emissionen und Kraftstoffverbrauch als auch den Betriebs-und Prozesskosten gerecht zu werden, wird von ZF für konventionelle, elektrifizierte und rein elektrische Antriebsstrangtopologien eine Effizienzbetrachtung für ausgewählte Offhighway-Fahrzeuge durchgeführt.
