Electrovasogram in patients with obstructive azoospermia and absent vas deferens

Abstract: The electric activity of the vas deferens (electrovasogram, EVG) was studied in 22 patients with obstructive azoospermia (OA), in 9 patients with bilaterally absent vasa deferentia, in 10 patients who had undergone epididymovasostomy for OA, and in 12 healthy volunteers (controls). Two electrodes were applied to the posterior aspect of the upper scrotum. EVG in normal subjects showed pacesetter potentials (PPs) that had the same frequency, amplitude, and velocity of conduction from both electrodes and were con… Show more

“…In support of this view, the duration of the monophasic ‘action potentials’ recorded was ≈ 4 s, a significantly long component likely to be far in excess of any real biological electrical event, furthermore the signals bore an uncertain relationship to detrusor contractions. The potentials were almost certainly a direct reflection of gross bladder movements rather than detrusor smooth muscle depolarization, and interestingly were not dissimilar to the ‘ureterogram’[21], ‘vasogram’[22], ‘electrorenogram’[23]‘cholecystogram’[24] and ‘electroorchidogram’[25] described by the same author.…”

“…CAVD is a syndrome in which a portion or all of the vas deferens, epididymis, and seminal vesicles are absent, either unilaterally or bilaterally [1]. It is the cause for approximately 1-2% of male infertility and 10% of ductal obstruction [2].…”

“…Zur weiteren Abklärung kann auch die nukleäre magnetische Resonanzspektroskopie (NMR) eingesetzt werden (van de Grond 1995), obwohl bei einem Vergleich beider Methoden in der Routine die transrektale Sonographie besser abschnitt (Engin et al 2000). Darüber hinaus wurde zur Abklärung der Samenleiterfunktion die Ableitung seiner elektrischen Potenziale (¹Elektrovaso-grammª) vorgeschlagen (Shafik 1996).…”
