Electrosynthesis of Nitrate via the Oxidation of Nitrogen on Tensile‐Strained Palladium Porous Nanosheets

Abstract: Nitrate is one of the essential raw ingredients in agriculture and industry. The electrochemical nitrogen oxidation reaction (NOR) is promising to replace the conventional nitrate synthesis industry with high energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission. Here, tensile‐strained palladium porous nanosheets (Pd‐s PNSs) were prepared. They exhibited enhanced activity for electrochemical NOR at ambient conditions, greatly outperforming Pd nanosheets. 15N isotope labeling experiments proved that nitrate originated… Show more

“…20 Recently, a few experimental reports emerged suggesting Pd-decorated MXenes and several oxides as potential electrocatalysts for nitrogen oxidative xation. [21][22][23][24] Fig. 1 Equations showing how nitric acid is manufactured on industrial scale by combining steam reforming, Haber-Bosch and Ostwald processes.…”

“…− and H 2 O during the eNO 3 − RR process. 42,43 The bending vibration for the −H−N−H intermediate can be observed at 1448 cm −1 , demonstrating the successive protonation process of NO 3 − . 15 Besides, the characteristic peaks of the product (NH 3 ) including −N−H stretching vibration and the adsorbed NH 3 (*NH 3 ) are detected at ∼3000 and 1150 cm −1 , respectively.…”

“…The conversion between N 2 and NO x is the key step during the whole process of nitrogen cycling. On the one hand, NOR is another effective way to fix nitrogen, which realizes the conversion from nitrogen to nitrate 107 . On the other hand, gaseous nitrogen oxides (eg, NO and NO 2 ) are the primary pollutants in the air, which should be removed or converted to nitrogen.…”
