Electrosyntheses of Freestanding and Conducting Poly[poly(N-vinyl-carbazole)] Films in Tetrahydrofuran Containing Additional Boron Trifluoride Diethyl Etherate

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Freestanding and conducting poly[poly(N-vinyl-carbazole)] (PPVK) films with good fluorescence property were synthesized electrochemically by direct anodic oxidation of poly(N-vinyl-carbazole) (PVK) in tetrahydrofuran containing boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BFEE) (12%, by volume) and Bu 4 NBF 4 (0.05 M). The oxidation onset potential of PVK in this medium was measured to be 1.07 V vs. SCE. PPVK films obtained from this medium showed good electrochemical behavior and good thermal stability with c… Show more

“…These two examples indicate that benzene and naphthalene can be successfully electropolymerized in similar systems due to their structural similarity. In addition, the electrochemical polymerization of fused‐ring monomers such as thianaphthene,31 dibenzofuran,32 fluorenes,33, 34 fluoranthene,35, 36 cabazole37, 38 and indole and its derivatives39–44 was successfully achieved in BFEE and its mixed electrolytes with TFA/SA. Therefore, the electrochemical polymerization of phenanthrene as a fused‐ring monomer should be possible using a mixed medium of BFEE and a strong acid because of its similar construction to benzene or naphthalene.…”

“…N -(9H-fluoren-9-yl) methacrylamide failed for its electrochemical polymerization in different electrolyte systems. However, the electropolymerization of poly (N-vinylcarbazole) formed through free radical polymerization of alkene can be easily realized [9]. It should be supposed that the precursor polymers based on poly [ N -(9H-fluoren-9-yl) methacrylamide] can also be polymerized.…”
