Electrospun poly(ethylene oxide)/hydrated iron oxide/sodium alginate composite nanofibers with multi‐functional properties

Abstract: Electrospun poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/hydrated iron oxide (HIO)/sodium alginate (SA) composite nanofibers with high ultimate tensile strength of ∼31.6 ± 0.4 MPa and good morphologies, such as smooth surface appearance and average diameter of 159 ± 55 to 475 ± 55 nm, were produced in the range of 50% HIO, with significant bacteria decontamination property (92.5% removal of Vibrio vulnificus) from high specific surface area and absorption property, and 10% SA, with anti‐bacterial property, based on PEO polymer … Show more

“…The mechanical properties of the PC‐CNT‐Oc films, such as ultimate tensile strength, tensile modulus, and elongation at ultimate tensile strength, dramatically increased compared to those of the PC electrospun without nanomaterials (Table ). This indicates that the compatibility and dispersion of nanomaterials improved on combining CNTs with Oc, which has high viscosity, high absorption properties, and a high specific surface area .…”

“…[255] Yet, multifunctional alginate NFs enriched with hydrated iron oxide nano-clays presenting strong antibacterial activity and good mechanical properties were prepared. [256] Chitosan-coated alginate NFs containing silver NPs and prepared in a double-step procedure were also reported. [257] This multifunctional nanofibrous structure displayed strong antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria due to the double action of chitosan and Ag-NPs.…”
