Electrospun PCL/keratin/AuNPs mats with the catalytic generation of nitric oxide for potential of vascular tissue engineering

Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO)‐generating materials are beneficial for vascular tissue engineering (VTE) scaffold because the produced NO would enhance endothelial cells viability while inhibit smooth muscle cell (SMC) proliferation and reduce platelet adhesion, resulting in ideal hemocompatibility and endothelialization. Herein, poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL)/keratin biocomposite mats were first fabricated, followed by in situ gold (Au) nanoparticles loading to afford PCL/keratin/AuNPs mats. These mats were characterized usin… Show more

“…Furthermore, the disulfide bonds endow keratin with redox‐responsiveness (Curcio, Blanco‐Fernandez, Diaz‐Gomez, Concheiro, & Alvarez‐Lorenzo, ) and catalytic activity to generate NO in blood (Jin, Wang, Yuan, & Shen, ). Previously, our group has electrospun keratin composite mats with good cytocompatibility for vascular tissue engineering scaffold (Li, Wang, Ye, Yuan, & Xiao, ; Wan et al, ; Wan et al, ).…”

“…The protein eNOS regulates the availability of NO, a lipophilic compound that takes part in several biological mechanism [50]. NO produced by the activity of eNOS modulate, beyond other functions, the degree of constriction experienced by a blood vessel, cell cycle progression, senescence or apoptosis, immune system cells activity and platelet aggregation [51][52][53][54][55].…”
