Electrospinning Induced Orientation of Protein Fibrils

Abstract: Amyloid-like fibrils are prepared from protein in the lab by controlled heat treatments, yet these must be further assembled to match the desirable mechanical and structural properties of biological fibers. Here, β-lactoglobulin fibrils were incorporated into poly(ethylene oxide) fibers of 40−180 nm diameter by electrospinning. Protein fibrils presented as short segments dispersed within electrospun fibers, with no change in fibril diameter after electrospinning. Imaging analysis revealed fibrils were aligned … Show more

“…Viscosity originates from molecular entanglement and it commonly positively correlates with molecular weight for the chemical with the same composition (Chen et al., 2020). From Figure 3, the apparent viscosities of OSAS, E10‐OSAS, E20‐OSAS, E30‐OSAS, and E40‐OSAS are 60.23, 16.63, 12.33, 8.13, and 3.65 Pa·s, respectively.…”

“…It was reported that these coiled chains would be elongated and orientated during the electrospinning process. 45,46 Besides, the pulling effect exerted by the highly rotating drum also favored the orientation of the polymer chains. 47,48 The orientation of the PVA chains in nanofibers was proved by polarized FTIR spectroscopy, as the polarized spectra collected with light that is polarized parallel and perpendicular to the nanofiber alignment direction exhibited completely different absorbance intensities (Figure S13).…”

“…It was found that PNFs had a net orientation with the long PNF-axis aligned with the fibers axis, and that incorporation of PNFs gave stiffer fibers. 248 In another recent study, a coaxial electrospinning approach was used, in which a sheath of polymer solution, with adequate electrospinning properties, encloses the protein core solution. This results in the formation of hybrid fibers with a stabilizing polymer shell and a core made up of PNFs.…”
