Electrophysiological studies in cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis.

Abstract: Seven patients with cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) were studied by electrophysiological techniques. The percentages of abnormalities detected in nerve conduction studies and electroencephalograms were 28-6% (two patients) and 100%, respectively. Patients and methodsElectrophysiological studies were performed in seven patients (six men and one woman) whose ages ranged from 35 to 50 (mean 40 3 years). The diagnosis of CTX was established from clinical manifestations and biochemical abnormalities. The subj… Show more

“…Reported computed tomography (CT) abnormalities include cerebellar white matter hypodensities above and below the tentorium (Berginer et al 1984;Waterreus et al 1987). EEG abnormalities are common and may be characterized by diffuse irregular slow theta and delta activity with frequent sharp wave discharges; however, these abnormalities are not unique to CTX (Waterreus et al 1987;Berginer et al 1984;Berginer et al 1982;Tokimura et al 1992).…”

“…Abnormalities in patients with CTX have been reported for visual evoked potential (VEP), somatosensory evoked potential (SSEP), brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP), and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) studies, which may reflect delayed central conduction (Pilo-de-la-Fuente et al 2011;Tokimura et al 1992;Ginanneschi et al 2013). Electromyography (EMG)/NCV findings demonstrating motor or sensorimotor axonal neuropathy, demyelinating neuropathy, and mixed neuropathy have been reported (Pilo-de-laFuente et al 2011;Ginanneschi et al 2013;Verrips et al 2000b).…”

“…It is only later in life that patients show psychomotor decline, and the typical tendon xanthomas. Daily oral supplementation with 750mg of chenodeoxycholic acid, a bile salt, typically corrects the biochemical abnormalities and may reverse some clinical symptoms [32, 33]. Some experience suggests that earlier treatment initiation may correlate with better outcomes [34].…”
