Electrophoretic variability in natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila simulans

Abstract: Genetic variation at 59 gene loci coding for enzymes (50) and larval proteins (9) has been studied in sympatric populations of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans from insular and continental origin. The average number of alleles per locus, the mean proportion of polymorphic loci and the mean heterozygosity are similar both within and between species. There are however some significant differences between D. simulans populations in the genotypic frequencies for four polymorphic loci.

“…D. simulans is less variable than are some tropical Drosophila species but is not very different in this respect from the average Drosophila. An average of these parameters in D. rnelanogaster using the studies of Kojima et al, (1970), Langley et a!., (1974), Band (1975, Triantaphyllidis et a!., (1980), Cabrera et al, (1982, Onishi eta!., (1982), Singh et a!., (1982), provides an estimate of 015 for H, of 0'65 for proportion of polymorphic loci, and of I 8 for the number of alleles per locus.…”

“…0.006). The average number of alleles per locus for the total sample was 4.3, nearly twice as large as the value found (2.3) in previous screenings of the same locality (Cabrera et al, 1982;Afonso et al, 1985). This difference is attributable to differences in sample size, which is 20 times greater in this study.…”

“…The following 20 loci have been analyzed as described by Cabrera et al (1982) Cytological analyses were made on salivary gland chromosomes stained with the lacto-aceticorcein method of Strickberger (1962). Breakpoints and nomenclature of inversions were established by comparing photographs with photographic representations of Bridges' standard maps (Lefevre, 1976).…”
