Electrophoretic Patterns of Parotid Fluid Proteins from Caries-Resistant and Caries-Susceptible Individuals

Abstract: Parotid saliva samples from caries-resistant and caries-rampant individuals were electrophoresed on polyacrylamide gel slabs. The parotid saliva of the caries-rampant group showed a significantly higher level of anodemigrating proteins, predominantly isoamylases, and a significantly lower level of cathode-migrating proteins than that of the caries-resistant group in both paraffin-stimulated and sour lemon-stimulated salivary flows.

“…Although the HRPs did not inhibit the growth of S. sanguis G9B, HRPs 1-2 significantly enhanced the growth of this organism. This observation tnay explain the finding of Balekjian et al (2), who reported a caries resistance correladon with parotid fiuid cadonic protein. The electrophoretic tnigration of some of the proteins in that study suggests a possible correlation with HRP 1.…”

“…Mandel et al 62 found no difference in parotid saliva proteins between caries-resistant and caries-active adults. Balekjian et al 63 found that a caries-rampant group exhibited a significant reduction in the proportion of basic proteins and a significant increase in amylase compared to a caries-resistant group. Conversely, Mandel and Bennick found no differences in concentrations of the acidic PRPs between cariesfree and caries-susceptible subjects.…”

“…Mandel ve ark., çürüklü ve çürüksüz erişkin-lerin parotid tükürüğündeki protein düzeylerinde herhangi bir fark olmadığını bildirirken; 20 Balekjian ve ark., çürüksüz bireylerle kıyaslandığında, yaygın çürükleri olan grupta tükürük protein seviyesinde önemli bir azalma ve amilaz miktarında önemli derecede artma gözlemlemişlerdir. 21 …”
