Electrophoretic Deposition and Characterization of the Doped BaCeO3 Barrier Layers on a Supporting Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 Solid-State Electrolyte

Abstract: In this study, the technology of electrophoretic deposition (EPD) micrometer barrier layers based on a BaCe0.8Sm0.19Cu0.1O3 (BCSCuO) protonic conductor on dense carrying Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SDC) solid-state electrolyte substrates is developed. Methods for creating conductive sublayers on non-conductive SDC substrates under EPD conditions, such as the synthesis of a conductive polypyrrole (PPy) layer and deposition of a layer of finely dispersed platinum from a suspension of its powder in isopropanol, are proposed.… Show more

“…A suspension based on LLZ powder with a concentration of 10 g/L was prepared in a mixed dispersion medium of isopropanol/acetylacetone in a ratio of 70/30 vol.%. The composition and ratio of the dispersion medium were chosen based on our previous investigations [ 25 , 30 ]. UST of LLZ suspension was carried out for 5–125 min at 25 °C using an ultrasonic bath (UZV-13/150-TH).…”

“…The EPD method is used in the creation of high-temperature electrochemical devices, such as solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), namely, in the formation of solid electrolyte layers, for example, based on doped zirconium dioxide and doped cerium dioxide, as well as barium cerate [ 20 , 21 , 22 ]. The substrates used should possess electrical conductivity for the implementation of EPD; however, it is possible to deposit coatings on non-conductive substrates by creating a conductive sublayer on their surface, for example, graphite or conductive polymer–polypyrrole [ 23 , 24 , 25 ]. For non-conductive substrates with a sufficient level of through porosity, it is possible to carry out direct EPD due to the appearance of conductive channels in the substrate’s porous structure.…”

“…Taking into account the results of our previous study [ 39 ], a mixed dispersion medium of isopropanol/acetylacetone in a ratio of 70/30 vol.% was chosen for the preparation of the suspensions based on the electrolyte materials. Suspensions of SDC-gn + 5 wt% SDC-lec and BCS-CuO with a concentration of 10 g/L were prepared by weighing the powders and then sonication using a UZV-13/150-TH ultrasonic bath with a generator power of 210 W at the operating frequency of 22 kHz for 5–125 min (at 25 °C).…”

“…Moreover, added in a small amount as a sintering additive, CuO can improve not only sinterability but also the grain boundary (GB) conductivity of doped BaCeO 3 , lowering the GB density [ 38 ]. Recently, we demonstrated good compatibility of electrophoretically deposited Cu-doped BaCe 0.8 Sm 0.2 O 3 barrier layers (~20 μm) with a dense SDC substrate (550 μm) [ 39 ].…”

“…Anode-supported planar solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) are one of the most widespread types of fuel cells because they are suitable for operations at lower temperatures (below 800 °C) [ 1 ] due to ohmic resistance of thin (10 µm) film electrolyte substantially lower than that of electrolyte-supported cells [ 2 , 3 ].…”
