Electronystagmography: Diagnostic Value in Intracranial Tumors

Abstract: Electronystagmographic examination of 12 patients with confirmed diagnosis of intracranial was carried out with a battery of tests. The Intracranial tumors most consistent finding in ten patients with cerebellopontine recess tumors was found with eye tracking and optokinetic tests. There was an alteration of the smooth pursuit eye movement, mainly by saccades. Diminution of optokinetic response was found to the side of the tumor (moving target towards unaffected side). Two patients with temporo-parietal tumors… Show more

“…These findings are, therefore, more consistent with those of bilateral flocculectomy. The oculomotor anbormalities in our patient group with large tumors are at variance with those of Potthoff, et al, 4 Three patients with large tumors had failure of fixation suppression of nystagmus. In all three, this was recorded when the ear opposite the tumor was irrigated with hot water.…”

“…There have been a number of reports suggesting that abnormalities in smooth pursuit and optokinetic nystagmus may be reliable signs of intrinsic and extrinsic brain stem disease [Benitez, 1970;Benitez and Bouchard, 1974]. Our results indicate that impaired smooth pursuit, particularly ataxia (category score = -2.12), cor relates with C-P angle tumors, and an ataxic pattern was present in C-P angle tumors only.…”
