Electronically Reconfigurable Beam Steering Antenna Using Embedded Rf Pin Based Parasitic Arrays (Erppa)

Abstract: Abstract-In this paper, an electronically reconfigurable beam steering antenna using embedded RF PIN switches based parasitic array (ERPPA) is proposed for modern wireless communication systems that operate at 5.8 GHz frequency. In the proposed antenna, a single driven element is fed by a coaxial probe, while each of the two parasitic elements is integrated with an RF PIN switches that embedded inside the substrate. In the conventional reconfigurable antennas, the RF PIN switches are mounted on narrow slots cr… Show more

“…Comparison of the proposed antenna with some of the already reported reconfigurable antennas is given in Table 2. It is noted that [7] and [12] offer size advantage over the proposed antenna, but limited by radiation beam direction around the boresight and comparatively lower gain. The switching scheme for the measurement used conducting strips which can be replaced by PIN diodes to implement an electrically reconfigurable antenna.…”

“…Considering the effect of the separation due to the small slots, the patch is mounted with six RF capacitances with a value of 100 pF to provide RF current smoothly flow between radiating patch, and blocking the DC biased current to flow through. Three RF inductors with value of 27 nH are placed in between biased wire and circular patch to isolate the RF current to flow to the DC bias line . The photograph of the fabricated proposed antenna is shown in Figure .…”

“…Reconfigurable antennas are described as antennas that support multiple functions within a single structure. This reconfiguration comes in different form such as frequency reconfiguration, polarization reconfiguration and pattern reconfiguration depending on the required applications [1][2][3][4][5][6][7].…”
