Electronic Structure of the Helium Molecular AnionHe2

Abstract: The recently discovered He 2~ ion is examined by means of configuration-interaction wave functions constructed from an extended Slater-type-orbitals basis. We find that the 4 n g state of He 2~ is bound relative to the a 2 Xu state of He 2 . The calculated electron affinity is 0.233 eV compared to 0.077 eV for the He" [ 4 P°] ion. This anion decays through the long-lived 4g component with r ~ 350 /xsec and the much shorter-lived 4g> TS components with r ~ 10 /xsec.

“…These anions are well-known in the gas phase and have been studied from both experimental 1214 and theoretical side. 1520 The basis for the above-mentioned speculation about the relevance of these anions has been observations 21,22 of negative ion resonances upon electron impact on helium droplets at about 22 eV and multiples thereof. This could be brought in line with the excitation of ground state helium into the first excited triplet state, i.e., He(1s2s 3 S), 23 by taking into account the energy loss of the impact electron due to the intrusion into the helium droplet.…”

“…Theoretical works on the "Ils (los lo"' 2o' lm"') metastable state of He2 were reported by Michels [9,10] who used the configuration interaction method, and by us [11,12] where the coupled cluster method and numerical orbital techniques were employed. These studies indicate that the principle of the formation of this state rests in a two-electron attachment to the He2+ core, which results in the formation of a quartet state, where both valence electrons occupy very diffused orbitals with bonding character.…”

“…One can assess this diA'erence upon examining Fig. 1 where we present the comparison of the repulsive energy curve for the ground state of the neutral He& cluster, the energy curves of the ground state and the erst excited state of He2+, the curve for the long-lived He2 Hg state studied earlier [5,9,10] (at 0.5 a.u. ).…”
