Electronic Spectroscopy of Medium-Sized Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: Implications for the Carriers of the 2175 Å Uv Bump

Abstract: Mixtures of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been produced by means of laser pyrolysis. The main fraction of the extracted PAHs was primarily medium-sized, up to a maximum size of 38 carbon atoms per molecule. The use of different extraction solvents and subsequent chromatographic fractionation provided mixtures of different size distributions. UV-VIS absorption spectra have been measured at low temperature by matrix isolation spectroscopy and at room temperature with PAHs as film-like deposits on … Show more

“…The 217 nm extinction bump (see Fig. 4) is entirely due to aromatic π → π transitions in PAHs, as proposed by Iatì et al (2008) and Cecchi-Pestellini et al (2008) and supported by the experimental results of Steglich et al (2010). The far-UV extinction rise is also mostly produced by PAHs.…”

“…There, the bump appears considerably narrower and further to the blue at 195 nm. It is expected to shift to longer wavelengths for mixtures with a larger mean size of the aromatic planes, approaching the position of the interstellar UV bump at 217.5 nm (Steglich et al 2010). …”

“…The applied CO 2 laser pyrolysis method is described elsewhere (Jäger et al 2009;Steglich et al 2010). The molecular components of the condensate were extracted with the solvents methanol (CH 3 OH) or dichloromethane (CH 2 Cl 2 ).…”

“…Spectra of anthracene and pyrene have been measured as well and compared with the literature data to validate our experimental setup. The matrix isolation spectra of the six molecules were recorded in Ne at 6.5 K with an apparatus described elsewhere (Steglich et al 2010). For hexabenzocoronene, the calibration procedure has been restricted to an Ne matrix spectrum (Rouillé et al 2009) since a jet spectrum in the wavelength range of interest is not available.…”
