Electronic Health Record and Parenteral Nutrition Functionality: A Gap Analysis

Abstract: Parenteral nutrition (PN) is a complex, high-alert medication that contains up to 40 different ingredients. Surveys have shown that current electronic health record (EHR) systems may lack functionality for safe and optimal delivery of PN. A gap analysis was performed by a multihospital system to identify opportunities to enhance the current PN process using the EHR utilized by the organization.

“… 63 Nevertheless, leading experts in the field have pointed out that currently available EHR systems lack the functionality to deliver PN safely and optimally across the entire continuum of care. 64 , 65 The primary problem is that though EHRs are usually functional within one institution, as soon as several institutions are involved an interface problem arises. This aspect is particularly relevant to the care of long-term PN patients who are moving from a hospital either to their home or to alternative care settings (and vice versa).…”
