Electronic confinement effects on the reaction field type calculations of solvent effects

Abstract: We analyze some procedures to introduce the effect of confining the electrons of the hydrogen atoms in cavitation spheres like those used in the self-consistent reaction field models for studying the solvent influence on molecular properties [as polarizable continuum model (PCM), or conductor screening model (COSMO)]. We have found that the boundary conditions to be applied have an important effect on the system energy that by no means should be neglected in this type of calculations. We have found as well tha… Show more

“…The value of the “cutoff” radius r 0 of the SBO can be used to study molecules with electrons confined in overlapping spheres centered on the nuclei, as is required when applying the PCM method (or any similar) to solved molecules . However, this requires a separate calculation of the coefficients C p (10) for each r 0 value.…”

“…However, this requires a separate calculation of the coefficients C p (10) for each r 0 value. In fact, in Table or Figure , we can see the energies of the hydrogen atom in a confining sphere of radius r 0 calculated by three procedures: Using SBO with fixed coefficients C p at an optimal value for the free hydrogen. Using SBO with coefficients independently calculated for each r 0 value. Using TSTO …”
