Electron scattering and ionization of NO, N2O, NO2, NO3and N2O5molecules: theoretical cross sections

Abstract: We have investigated the scattering of electrons from atmospheric molecules NO, N2O, NO2, NO3 and N2O5 at incident electron energy Ei from the ionization threshold (∼10 eV) to 2000 eV. Basically total cross sections for elastic and inelastic collisions are calculated and hence total ionization cross sections are deduced in the ‘complex scattering potential-ionization contribution’ method, developed earlier. Various calculated cross sections are compared extensively with experimental and theoretical data wherev… Show more

“…Details of the theoretical formalism employed here to determine total cross-sections (TCS) for the impact of electrons can be found in our earlier papers [11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. Hence, only a brief summary will be given here.…”

“…These densities are also plotted in Figure 2. The photoelectron impact ionization cross sections of CO 2 , N 2 , O 2 , O, CO, NO and N are taken from Joshipura et al [2007, 2009] and references therein. These cross sections are shown in Figure 3 between energy range 10 eV‐2 keV.…”

“…Additionally, despite all the above facts, the studies on the total ionization cross sections as well as the PICSs of N 2 O are scarce even at low energies of electron impact ( 1 keV) [2], [14][15][16][17][18][19]; some of the reported results [14,15] have significant deficiencies with regard to collecting the energetic ions. Large discrepancies are observed in the reported data for partial cross sections of fragment ions observed in the dissociative ionization of N 2 O at low energies of electron impact [14][15][16][17].…”
