Electron Removal in Helium Afterglows

Abstract: Observations of the electron density, visible and near ultraviolet light intensity, and spectrum associated with a 3000 Mc/sec. pulsed electrodeless discharge have been made. Our electron density data indicate recombination-type electron removal with a constant a = 1.0XlO~8 cm 3 /ion-sec. in reasonably good agreement with previous data. During the discharge, the spectrum of atomic helium predominates. In the afterglow, the band spectrum of He2 predominates. The total energy radiated in the wave-length range 20… Show more

“…At certain temperatures r) could be expressed as the sum of two coefficients, one dependent on p and another independent of p. The values of r] obtained by Biondi and Brown in helium (-lo-'?) are larger than those later found by Johnson, McClure and Holt (1950) with the same method, but in neon Biondi and Brown's value (-lo-') practically agreed with the later determinations of Holt, Richardson, Howland and McClure (1950). I n diatomic gases Biondi and Brown (1949 b) showed that r] decreased with atomic number, and in hydrogen was independent of pressure at 3 0 0 " ~, maintaining a value of 2.5 x lo-' cm3/sec over the pressure range below 13 mm Hg.…”

В экспериментах [12], выполненных с помощью техники Test Storage Ring, получено α DR ≈ 3 • 10 −10 cm 3 /s для He…”
