Electron–positron pairs in physics and astrophysics: From heavy nuclei to black holes

Abstract: Due to the interaction of physics and astrophysics we are witnessing in these years a splendid synthesis of theoretical, experimental and observational results originating from three fundamental physical processes. They were originally proposed by Dirac, by Breit and Wheeler and by Sauter, Heisenberg, Euler and Schwinger. For almost seventy years they have all three been followed by a continued effort of experimental verification on Earth-based experiments. The Dirac process, e + e − → 2γ, has been by far the … Show more

“…based on the AdS/CFT correspondence) setups were considered in order to investigate particle production by external fields in the strong coupling regime [167][168][169][170][171][172][173][174][175][176]. Let us also finally mention another recent review on the Schwinger mechanism more focused on the backreaction and applications in astrophysics [177], as well as some works on the closely related question of pair creation in a curved space-time [178][179][180][181][182][183].…”

“…In addition, the QED radiation friction weakening is taken into account by multiplying the radiation force by a form-factor G e (χ e )) given by Eq. (25). We note that results of detailed computer simulations of the high power gamma ray flash emission by a multi-petawatt pulse laser have been presented in Ref.…”

“…Remarkable progresses in the understanding of GRBs have been made possible thanks to the great amount X-and γ-rays and high energy data and to a deeper theoretical understanding of WD [92], NS [87,89] and BH [93], leading to a new paradigm purporting the role of binary systems as progenitors of GRBs: CO core -NS binaries for long The fireshell simulation (red line) of the light curve of Episode 2 of the prototype GRB 090618 (green data). The small inset reproduces the CBM profile required for the simulation.…”
