Electron microscopy of normal auman gingival epithelium

Abstract: Biopsies of the labial part of normal gingival epithelium were obtained from 18 females (average age of 25 years) who had performed strict oral hygiene for two weeks or more. Standardized areas of the specimens were investigated electron microscopically. All specimens exhibited parakeratosis and were free from inflammatory cells. The optical basement membrane corresponded. to the basement lamina and an intermediate layer about 0.5 to 1 micron wide, containin various fibrils at random orientation. Cell junction… Show more

“…The cornification of the epithelial sheets in the esophagus is more incomplete than that in the epidermis. Information on the barrier mechanism in wet stratified epithelium, including the esophageal epithelium, is still fragmentary (Schroeder and Theilade, 1966;Akisaka and Oda, 1978;Andersen, 1980;Tsukita and Furuse, 2002).…”

“…At the same time gingival epithelium provides the protective integument of the periodontium. The histological appearance of human gingival epithelium has been studied in great detail and described by numerous authors [9][10][11][12][13]. This study report characterizes the epithelial cell behavior collected from clinically healthy and inflamed human gingival tissues.…”

“… Profilaxis antibiótica forma experimental con el grado clínico-anatomopatológico de la inflamación. Estudios histológicos han demostrado que, incluso en condiciones de normalidad clínica, está siempre presente una cierta alteración tisular que sería compatible con un entorno favorable a las bacteriemias (93). Tampoco se ha establecido la diferencia entre gingivitis y periodontitis en la producción de bacteriemias (94).…”
