Certain regions of the salivary gland polytene chromosomes of Drosophila aurar& and its closely related species D. triauraria and D. quadraria, exhibit definite toroidal structures, as evidenced in routinely fixed and stained squash preparations under the light microscope. These toroids are associated with intercalary heterochromatin, as revealed by ectopic pairing and weak points. Similar observations on the giant chromosomes of 1). melanogaster are discussed.
