Electron-Ion Recombination Measurements Motivated by AGN X-Ray Absorption Features: Fe xiv Forming Fe xiii

Abstract: Recent spectroscopic models of active galactic nuclei (AGN) have indicated that the recommended electronion recombination rate coefficients for iron ions with partially filled M-shells are incorrect in the temperature range where these ions form in photoionized plasmas. We have investigated this experimentally for Fe XIV forming Fe XIII. The recombination rate coefficient was measured employing the electron-ion merged beams method at the Heidelberg heavy-ion storage-ring TSR. The measured energy range of 0 − 2… Show more

“…For earlier results, inaccuracies in the atomic data used also led to biased results, especially for Fe when the most recent di-electronic recombination rates were not used, as discussed by Netzer (2004). For instance, Schmidt et al (2006) and Nahar et al (2009) performed detailed atomic calculations of the di-electronic recombination rates. Schmidt et al (2004) measured the wavelengths of the O v lines, after Steenbrugge et al (2003) had noted that the wavelength used for the 22 Å line was likely to be wrong.…”

“…A factor of ∼1.5-3 is expected due to an experimental artifact (Gwinner et al 2000;Wolf & Gwinner 2003;Hörndl et al 2006). The remaining factor of ∼5.6-11.3 suggests the presence of unresolved near-zero eV DR resonances as has been seen for other systems (Uwira et al 1997;Savin et al 2002bSavin et al , 2003Schmidt et al 2006;Lestinsky et al 2009;Schippers et al 2011).…”

“…Experimental studies of B-and Al-like ns 2 np systems have been performed for B-like Fe 21+ (Savin et al 2003) and Allike Fe 13+ (Schmidt et al 2006;Badnell 2006a) using the TSR Cooler. In both cases, good agreement was found between theory and experiment for ΔN = 0 DR.…”
