Electron-induced processes in H+2, D+2and T+2

Abstract: We investigate the isotopic effects on the cross sections of the dissociative excitation, dissociative recombination, vibrational excitation and vibrational de-excitation of the homonuclear hydrogen molecular cations with electrons of energy above the dissociation threshold of the electronic ground state. The computations were accomplished using an improved numerical code based on a previous work (Fifirig and Stroe 2008 Phys. Scr. 78 065302).

“…Note the review on the electron-scattering cross sections for elastic and inelastic processes at different electron energies for HD and D 2 molecules [34]. This paper continues a previous work [35] investigating the slow electron collision with the D + 2 molecular ion in its electronic ground state and in a low vibrational level (0 − 2). Here we are focused on the D + 2 dissociation for a Franck-Condon distribution of the initial vibrational levels given by electron impact ionization of D 2 .…”

“…As such, they argued that the heavier system is more likely to autoionize than the lighter one, which therefore reduces the apparent DR cross section. The DR cross sections calculated theoretically for H 2 + , D 2 + and T 2 + , by Stroe and Fifirig, 15 also showed an isotopic effect with T 2 + having the lowest DR cross section and H 2 + the highest. The authors explained this by stating that the cross section for electron capture is determined by the Franck-Condon overlap between the initial bound and dissociate wave functions, which is different for the isotopomers.…”
