Electron Emission of Gas-Phase [Au25(SG)18-6H]7− Gold Cluster and Its Action Spectroscopy

Abstract: A colloidal solution of Au25(SG)18-protected metal gold clusters was electrosprayed. [Au25(SG)18-6H]7− was selected, stored in a quadrupole ion trap, and irradiated with a UV−vis tunable laser. The excess charges are due to the deprotonation of six COOH moieties and a net charge of −1 on the Au core. Photoexcitation of this species results in electron detachment. The action spectrum obtained by recording the electron detachment yield as a function of the laser wavelength displays a strong decrease as the photo… Show more

“…Observed charge states in excess of ±2 are normally only achievedby electrochemical methods 5,66 or by the use of ligands that bear charge. 18,19,25,67 The fixed charge of the IBANs has a strong effect on interactions between the nanoclusters and their environment, increasing solubility in polar aprotic solvents such as DMF 68 and attracting counterions to the IBAN surface. The associating counterions appear to be principally Ag + , as evidenced by the presence of Ag-IBAN adducts in the mass spectra (Figure S1).…”

“…This fragmentation of "surface groups" has already been observed in the case of gold nanoclusters. [36][37][38][39] The MS/MS spectrum is also characterised by 1) low-mass singly charged DOTAGA ligands, complexed or not to Gd 3 + , and polysiloxane fragments made up of APTES and TEOS, and 2) two intense doubly and triply charged ions between 1500 and 2000 Th (Figure 7 c). Interestingly, these peaks correspond to molecular masses of about 3520 and 4910 Da the sum of which is roughly equal to that of the initial SRP, approximately 8500 Da.…”

“…In the case of Au NCs (i.e., for Au:Zw 1:1, Au:Zw 1:2, and Au:Zw 1:5), mass spectrometry is reckoned as a suited technique to determine the full size and the structure of metal NCs. [35][36][37][38][39][40] We previously attempted to determine specific magic clusters using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization / time of flight (MALDI-Tof) technique on those types of NCs without any success. 28 Here, the high mass setting is optimized for the Au:Zw NCs.…”
