“…The observed significant changes in the content of the considered functional groups can be determined by the alternating processes of partial dehydration (dehydroxylation) due to the radiation heating and hydroxylation due to the interaction with H · and OH · radicals formed at the radiolysis of adsorbed water molecules. In a series of our previous studies (Vasiljeva et al 2002 , 2006 ; Shmykov et al 2009 ; Mjakin et al 2009 ) similar functional transformations were observed on the surface of various materials including dispersed oxides, ceramics, polymers, etc.…”

“…The functionality of graphite surface were studied using the selective adsorption of a series of acid–base indicators with different intrinsic pK a values in the range from −5 to 15 from their aqueous solutions on the surface centers with the corresponding pK a values according to the approach generally described in Tanabe ( 1971 ), Nechiporenko ( 1995 ) and experimental procedure described in detail in Vasiljeva et al ( 2002 , 2006 ), Shmykov et al ( 2009 ), Mjakin et al ( 2009 ). Due to the dissociation of indicator molecules with specific pK a constants, their dissociated moieties tend to selectively adsorb on certain surface centers (also undergoing dissociation in water with similar pKa values) (Tanabe 1971 ; Nechiporenko 1995 ; Tyurin Ju 2001 ) to substitute for such dissociated species as chemisorbed or physically adsorbed water, hydroxyls, protons, etc.)…”

“…Weak acid was used to accelerate the reaction between the hydroxylated surface and alkoxysilanes. 51,52 Figure 5 shows the effect of the immersion time of AONPmodified MC in the alkoxysilane solutions. The MCA was prepared by immersing different MCs in the same solution but for different time periods ranging from 1 to 10 h. It turned out that an immersion time longer than 6 h could damage the homogeneity of the nanostructured surface.…”

“…The functionality of samples was studied using selective adsorption from their aqueous solutions of a series of acid–base indicators with different intrinsic p K a values in the range from −4.4 to 14.2 on the surface sites with the corresponding p K a values resulting in the change of the indicator solution optical density. The experimental procedure was reported in detail by Mjakin and co-authors. Another factor contributing to the optical density change is the change of the aqueous medium acidity as a result of water interactions with the surface sites. For this reason, the performed analysis involved spectrophotometric measurements (using a spectrophotometer LEKI SS2109UV (Russia)) of the following optical density ( D ) values: D 0 – for the initial aqueous solution of the indicator of a certain concentration; D 1 – for the same solution containing a sample of the analyzed compound of a certain weight where both the indicator adsorption and pH change affect the optical density; D 2 – for the same solution added to the solvent (water) decanted after the contact with a sample of the same weight.…”
