Electron and photon induced reactions on nuclei in the nucleon resonance region

Abstract: We calculate total photon-nucleus and electron-nucleus cross sections γA → X, eA → e ′ X and several cross sections on pion and eta production in nuclei in the energy regime between the first and the third resonance region for photon virtualities Q 2 ≤ 1.0 GeV 2 within a semi-classical BUU transport model. In both cases we discuss the varying influence of several medium modifications on the cross sections for different values of Q 2 .

“…All those processes are implemented by an absorption probability depending on the in-medium collisional width for which we use the results of Oset and Salcedo [74]. We emphasize that the whole πN ∆ dynamics has been tested extensively and also compared to data in A A → π X [65], π A → X [71,75] and γ A → π X [69] and recently in pionic double charge exchange reactions [72].…”

“…which in the case of baryons contains an effective scalar potential S [35]. The right-hand side of the BUU equation (called the collision integral) consists of a gain and a loss term for the phase space density F i at the different spacetime points, accounting for interactions between the particles beyond the mean-field potential.…”

“…Furthermore, the quasifree contributions of single π 0 , double π 0 , and π 0 π ± photoproduction have been determined. The data are compared to the results of a semi-classical Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model [34,35] which accounts for medium effects such as Fermi motion, nuclear binding, Pauli blocking, resonance broadening and includes a realistic description of the FSI. The treatment follows the trajectories of the particles through the nucleus and therefore yields additional information not accessible to experiment.…”

“…The experimental study of meson electroproduction on the proton, currently underway at JLab, is presently providing data in this region [5,6]. Similar studies in nuclei would add information on the in-medium dynamics of these resonances and on possible modifications of baryon properties inside the nucleus [7].…”
