Electromyography evaluation of masseter and temporalis, bite force, and quality of life in elderly patients during the adaptation of mandibular implant‐supported overdentures

Abstract: Comfort and stability improved during the treatment, demonstrated by the QoL and bite force results. These results are positive for elderly patients who might refuse an implant-supported overdenture due to treatment length.

“…31,32 A total of 4 electrodes were positioned above and below the vermillion border of the lips, with each positioned longitudinally to the muscle bundle on the right and left side of both lips. Signals were recorded during mandibular rest (10 seconds), 33 suction of water with a straw 32 (10-cm length×3-mm thickness) (6 seconds), and pronunciation of the syllables /bah/, /mah/, and /pah/ and the word 'Mississippi' 24 (3 times each, after which the highest value was tabulated). During the examinations, the participants were seated on a chair with their feet on the floor and their arms on their lap, 24 and the Frankfurt plane (parallel to the floor) was used as a reference to keep the head straight.…”

“…During the tests, the subjects sat in a comfortable office chair while maintaining their upright posture, with feet flat on the floor and arms resting on their legs. We analyzed the masseter and temporalis muscles in both sides; for the static evaluation, the participants were evaluated during rest, protrusion, laterality movements (right and left), and maximal voluntary dental clenching for 4 s. Additionally, the maximal voluntary contraction with inert material was recorded for 4 s, so that the electromyography samples could be normalized (13). The inert material consisted of a paraffin sheet (Parafilm M, Pechiney Plastic Packaging, Batavia, IL, USA) inserted between the occlusal faces of the upper and lower first molars on the right and left sides of the dental arch.…”

“…Complete dentures may introduce its own as an answer to restoring persons' oral esthetics besides mastication ability. But due to anatomical, masticatory and sensitive causes it is not all the time likely to reach the amount of stability and retention needed to offer a prosthesis that is comfy to edentulous patients especially for mandibular prosthesis wearing (1)(2)(3)(4) . Implant retained overdentures have been a management commonly used for the edentulous patients treatment for the last 25 years and liable to attain good proven results.…”
