Electromyographic Analysis of Three Different Types of Lat Pull-Down

Abstract: The purpose of this work was to evaluate the activity of the primary motor muscles during the performance of 3 lat pull-down techniques through surface electromyography (EMG). Twenty-four trained adult men performed 5 repetitions of behind-the-neck (BNL), front-of-the-neck (FNL), and V-bar exercises at 80% of 1 repetition maximum. For each technique, the root mean square from the EMG signal was registered from the pectoralis major (PM), latissimus dorsi (LD), posterior deltoid (PD), and biceps brachii (BB) and… Show more

“…During back exercises, there is a relative contribution of elbow flexors with a concomitant activity of shoulder extensors, such as latissimus dorsi, teres major, and pectoralis major (external portion) (12,13,23). However, biceps curl exercise is performed mainly by elbow flexor muscles (9,10).…”

“…11,14 During the dynamic movement, the Pectoralis Major (sternal portion), Latissimus Dorsi and Teres Major are the major acting muscles, 10,11,13,[15][16][17] while the Rectus Abdominis and the Erector Spinae act active in isometric contractions (trunk maximal isometric contractions of the Ab Wheel Rollout exercise keeping the knees fixed on the floor and the arms taut. 21 To perform the exercise, all subjects were randomly assessed in the following three positions related to the angle between the arms and trunk, in random order: arms aligned vertically with the Ab Wheel Rollout exercise (neutral); 90 degrees and 150 degrees.…”
